Overall I think that I’m quite satisfied with my performance throughout this project. At the very start of the project I wasn’t quite too sure with the program as I’ve never used it before, but after going through a few tutorials and collaborating with peers I managed to get the hang of it. For my project I decided to do something a bit more out of my comfort zone to experiment with the effects, the hard part of the project was creating the particle systems. Even though for the Live Performance my particles didn’t react how I wanted to due to some technical difficulties (I even asked Richard what was wrong and he couldn’t figure it out) it still reacted well enough to demonstrate the effects I wanted to create. I enjoyed using Touch Designer along with Touch OSC as it demonstrated good communication from program to program. Creating the soundtrack was quite fun as well as I learned to use Ableton Live Suite more.
My visuals were basically meant to link in with the music, when the music got more crowded and busy and fast, my particles would increase and change colours, feedback would be turned on. As soon as the music dies down I would turn down the birth rate to keep the screen quite and less crowded.
With Touch OSC, I think I could’ve mapped a few more changing attributes such as rotating the kernel, scaling the sizes of the particles but due to my limitation of knowledge for the program I didn’t realize this till after my Live Performance. It would of certainly added more visual impact for the performance. Throughout all this experimenting and designing my skills have improved a lot.
Touch OSC Mapped Controls for FEAR Project
Explanation of FEAR Project This is an explanation video of my FEAR Project with another video placed inside it to show the interface of Touch OSC. This basically explains how each node is working to produce the Live Performance uploaded earlier, how it’s connected and affected by other nodes; and also how I controlled some elements externally with a program on my iPad 2 called ‘Touch OSC’.
This is the Particle System that I created earlier and wanted to project for the Live Performance, for some reason after some technical help from Richard, my particles still wouldn’t act like they did in this video, but nonetheless the other effect was still effective and showed a little bit of the effect I was trying to make.

F.E.A.R Finish Everything And Relax
This is my FEAR Project Live Performance. It involves a few pieces of geometry which is reacting to the music, followed by a particle system that is being controlled via my iPad 2 using ‘Touch OSC’. Touch OSC allows me to map MIDI controls which Touch Designer recognises and makes the particles react to how I want. The messages sent are done by using a ‘CHOP Exporter’ from my ‘OSC In CHOP’. A video will follow this showing a live viewing of both Touch OSC controlling onscreen Touch Designer. The feedback particle system I created didn’t work as how I would’ve liked it to, I previously uploaded a video of the proper Feedback system I created myself.
Experimental Tests for audio reactive box
Touch OSC Mapping in Touch Designer. OSC is being used on the iPad 2 whilst Touch Designer is receiving it as ‘OSC Input’. The mapping is then done according to how I want my particles to react to my desires.
Particle System experiment, videos will be posted later as BootCamp doesn’t seem to be rendering my videos.
FEAR Poster Follows the same concept as the CD Cover, but in this case I added a particle swirling in the middle, representing something that the person must do (Finish Everything) before they can start to relax.
